PRESS RELEASE:
16 SEPTEMBER 2005
The Gauteng Wargames League held on Friday night, 16 September 2005, at Wits University at 19H00 saw a revival in fortunes for the Wits Wargames Club.
After Wits' shocking defeat against Old Edwardians on 26 August 2005, the Wits club restructered their doubles team in order to maximise their performance. Although there were a number of stages where the tables could have been turned, under the skilfull control of David Vannucci, the Wits team scored an impressive 30 - 2 result over the Independent Wargames Team.
The Independant Wargames team also had to contend with a re-invigorated Richard Ligault (Old Edwardian Wargames Club) who demonstrated his skill at their expense. There was no doubt that Richard Ligault remains one of the top players in South Africa.
The final results for the evening were:
Wits University Wargames Club - 32 points
Old Edwardian Wargames Club - 20 points
Independent Wargames Team - 14 points
_______________________________________ 26 AUGUST 2005
The Gauteng Wargames League held on Friday night, 26 August 2005, at Wits University at 19H00 was crucial in determining the leaders in such league.
There was no doubt that Wits needed to beat the Old Edwardian Wargames Club in order to stamp its dominance not only on the league, but also on Ancients figure-gaming in South Africa as whole.
Not surprisingly, therefore, Wits put in a very strong team of Kurt Wibmer (singles player), David Vannucci and Wang Chang (doubles team).
Old Ed's team was Dominic Bauer (singles player), Ingo Haferung and Colin Webster (doubles team).
Tension ran high as the two top Gauteng clubs locked horns and battled the night away. David and Wang put up a strong front and threatened the more experienced Old Ed's team at every turn. In fact, at one stage it appeared as though the its doubles team would break through the Old Ed's team defence. But it was not to be! As fate would have it, a risky manoeuvre enacted by Ingo Haferung, smashed through the Wits centre to leave a gaping hole that could not be defended.
The final results for the evening were:
Old Edwardian Wargames Club - 44 points
Wits University Wargames Club - 20 points
